On Merchants

“The parson lives on the sins of the people, the doctor on their diseases, and the lawyer on their disputes and quarrels. But the merchant lives on the wealth of the people. He never wishes for a poor customer or a poor country… the merchant has every inducement to seek and support the wealth of the state.”

If  merchants, say Walmart, were adhering to that policy they would be paying better and providing better benefits.  And the difference between CEO pay and the lowest employee wouldn’t be increasing every day.  Nor would politicians tip the scales for one entity, say Foxconn, and not another.

It’s a good though, but certainly not followed to any degree in this day and age..
