Heh.
Washington (CNN)House Speaker Paul Ryan deleted a tweet Saturday touting the GOP tax overhaul after critics called him out for appearing out of touch with the reality of low-income individuals’ financial situations.
The tweet shared the story of a secretary who, according to a report by the Associated Press, was “pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week.”“A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week … she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year,” Ryan tweeted with a link to the full article.A basic Costco membership costs $60 a year.People, including several prominent Democrats, noted on social media that $1.50 per week is not a significant pay bump.
No, it is not a huge pay bump, but it is a pay bump. Just remember that the Democrats would rather that she didn’t get a pay bump at all. Instead, they would prefer that she send that $1.50/week to them to spend in Washington. Who is out of touch with low-income folks?
Nancy Pelosi was crowing about $40 extra in 2011

Missing from the story: how many hours a week she works as a “school secretary” and what deductions she takes, if any
I’m guessing the job is part-time, low hours. And if the total salary is 20k/yr or less, she probably isn’t paying any Fed taxes at year end anyway.
From what we’re seeing, the tax cut is roughly a 4% increase in take home pay, which is coming out to a full paycheck when annualized.
$3 x 25 x 26 = $1850/year
So I’m calling BS on her story.
Definitely BS, yes.
Barring any other changes in her payroll deductions, the only way she can proclaim $1.50/week is if she makes $12.50 a week!
Here’s why:
In her school district the lowest pay is $18.50/hr.
Makes no difference: Married/joint, single, HOH.
Barring no other deductions/increases.
If full time (2080 hrs/yr), her annual salary is $38,480. Old tax rate: 15% ($5,772) New tax rate: 12% ($4614). A difference of $1158, or +$22 a week, +$88 a month.
If half time (1040 hrs/yr), her annual salary is $19,240. Rates the same. 2017: $2886 2018: $2309 A difference of +$577, or +$11/wk, +$44/mth.
It isn’t “her” story, it is Ryan’s. Until Ryan puts out the source and provides some details it is all speculation as to the veracity of the claim. Since Ryan yanked the tweet so quickly, odds are he made it all up.
Nobody cares
Hey Average Joe, I figured you’d be “Under Cover”. Your words, not mine.
