Coronavirus lockdowns have ‘destroyed millions of livelihoods’ but failed to alter the course of the pandemic given many US states have seen lower infection rates after easing restrictions, a JP Morgan study has claimed.
The statistical analysis has raised questions about the effectiveness of the lockdowns put in place across much of the United States two months ago to stop the spread of COVID-19.
It suggests that the lockdown measures have not only resulted in economic devastation but could have also resulted in more COVID-19 deaths.
The strict stay-at-home measures put in place by the governors of most states in mid-March has so far seen nearly 39 million American lose their jobs and forced businesses to close.

Many states, including Alabama, Wisconsin and Colorado, have seen lower infection reproduction rates (R rates) after lockdown measures were lifted, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Nevada, Rhode Island, Texas, North Dakota and Pennsylvannia are the states where infection rates increased after lockdowns ended, according to the report.
Infection rates have continued to decline even once a lag period for new infections to become visible is factored in, according to the report.
A chart included in the report shows that many US states have seen a lower rate of transmission (R rate) after full-scale lockdowns were ended.

But my evidence is that we are a cleaner nation with all the disinfecting going on. Most people are practicing social distancing, when possible. We have many people wearing masks. We know the hospital system will not be overrun. More people are washing their hands and more frequently.

Neither is the Hong Kong Flu pandemic of 1968. 50 years later remnants are still walking around and taking out the occasional victim. My class is now preplanning our 50th reunion for next year – none of us have any recollection that we survived such an event like that – we were like 16 years old at the time. Major media outlets were the daily newspaper, TV newscasts (no time shifting, so you had to be sitting in from of the TV when the news was on), and newsmagazines like Time/Newsweek, and photojournalism magazine (LIFE). And there were so many other things going on, that issues like this were not front and center.
It came in two waves – about 100,000 US citizens died. Spread pretty rapidly because of the Viet Nam war going on, so US soldiers were returning from South Asia on a regular basis.
100,000 people died in the US. The population at the time was 200 Million, which works out to 500 deaths per million. Today we are at 330 Million, so the equivalent death toll would be 165,000. Currently we are at 292 deaths per million, and are closing in on 100,000 deaths. Yesterday there were 1400 deaths reported in the United States – at that rate it will take another 45 days to scale up to the Hong Kong flu epidemic.
For perspective, 28,680 soldiers died in 1968/1969: 11,780/16,900). Those were the days of young people launching big block muscle cars into roadside trees, ravines, and each other. In 1968/1969 there were 106,268 traffic fatalities (52,725/53,543).
