The White House is mulling a tax on vehicles’ mileage to pay for a proposal to revamp the nation’s infrastructure expected in the coming days, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Friday.
In an interview with CNBC, Buttigieg said a tax on miles driven ‘shows a lot of promise,’ as President Joe Biden’s administration faces pressure to find ways to fund infrastructure improvements, a goal that has eluded the past two presidential administrations.
‘The gas tax used to be the obvious way to do it. It’s not anymore, so a so-called vehicle miles traveled tax or mileage tax, whatever you want to call, could be a way to do it.’
He floated the idea days before President Biden is set to head to Pittsburgh to make a pitch for a $3 trillion infrastructure plan, with proposals to fix roads and bridges while also funding ‘social infrastructure’ to fund for pre-K programs and childcare.
Hurting poor and middle class, that is what liberals do.

Good to hear BootyJig is pushing to end the Gas Tax then. I’d welcome sub $2 dollar gas again.
I like the idea of a mileage tax that only applies to electric vehicles. Of course that will never happen.
To what end does he propose this?
The conventional rule is that one raises the price to decrease an activity. Does ButtPlug think that Americans will drive less–or herd themselves into cities–to reduce the cost of driving? Since this tax will smack farmers and ranchers proportionately more than apartment-dwellers on bus routes, does ButtPlug have something against rural people?
He doesn’t care about cost-of-living issues, of course–but jacking up trucking costs WILL jack up the cost of everything. Groceries, household goods…….
@THreeJanz: Wisconsin already assesses a fee on electric vehicles. It’s not much ($100.00) and does NOT apply to hybrids.
