MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin is known as America’s Dairyland, but the rising popularity of plant and nut-based dairy alternatives is becoming a concern for many in the dairy industry.
Yesterday, three bills that would block dairy and meat alternatives from using the labels “meat” or “cheese” on their packaging were passed unanimously by the state assembly. Now the bills move to the senate.
Many in support of the bills are concerned that labeling alternative products as “meat” or “dairy” can be misleading to consumers. In a study done by the Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association, about one-fourth of consumers who picked up a plant-based cheese alternative believed that it contained dairy milk due to the cheese label.
You severely underestimate the stupidity of consumers.
Look at all the warnings on products that we think are basic.

If said companies admit that they concoct meat and dairy “alternatives” then they can’t – or shouldn’t be able to – advertise their products named with world-wide agreed upon meat and dairy terminology. There is no other reason to name your additive-ladened soy goop as “burger” other than attempting to confuse. This is particularly true when dealing with company packaged/frozen foods, like that box of twelve “patties” or pack of six “sausages”.
Aside from the processed chemical soups that makes up most “alternatives”, who in their right mind would want swallow plant-based “cheese”? And you will notice there are no companies making ground beef into a kale “alternative”.
For reference, your Burger King Impossible Whopper ($1-$2 more than the beef version):
