The mayor of Canada’s capital, Ottawa, has declared a state of emergency in response to more than a week of truckers’ protests against Covid restrictions.
Jim Watson said the city was “losing this battle” and “completely out of control”.
He added the protests posed a threat to residents’ safety. There have also been reports of racial attacks.
Ottawa’s centre has been paralysed, with vehicles and tents blocking roads.
The “Freedom Convoy” was sparked by the introduction last month of a new rule that all truckers must be vaccinated to cross the US-Canada border, but the protests have morphed into broader challenges to Covid health restrictions.
The protesters have since gathered in central Ottawa near Parliament Hill, and their demands have grown to include ending all such mandates nationwide and opposing the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Back in the olden days NAS Miramar would host Canadian squadrons a couple of times a year. Mostly ACM training against our aggressor squadron for a couple of weeks at a time, but they also participated in war gaming evolutions with their anti-sub warfare aircraft. Ground and maintenance crews came along as did small contingents of observers. I have no idea how beneficial any of that cross-decking really was, but there had to be at least some benefits to having their Air Force personnel exposed to the rather unconventional environment of naval aviation. I would assume this is still occurring. Canada eventually transitioned to F-18s that were essentially stock editions of USN F-18s. They were active in the Gulf Wars and Yugoslavia that I know of, so Canadian military air assets are at the very least capable of functioning in adjunct roles.
They’ve ordered F-35s so they’re at least trying to keep up… somewhat.

The convoy is supposed to start today in Barstow and the organizers are expecting about 1000 trucks to start off.
And I-40 is shut down near Flagstaff, AZ because of a maj I r winter snowstorm, and Arizona being a hot weather state, is not really equipped to open it up quickly. Because of this, the trucks will be bunched up, making the convoy stronger.
