The violent clash took place this morning in Tanhuato in the west of the country – an area known for its strong links to drug cartel.

It as confirmed that 37 of those that died were civilians and the other two were federal police officers.

During the shootout, a number of cars were reportedly set on fire – causing loud explosions across the area.
