College Students Struggle to Vote. Really?

For cryin’ out loud. These are supposed to be our best and brightest and we can’t expect them to figure this out? I’m almost certain that every Wisconsin college kid under 21 can figure out how to get beer.

There are many barriers that keep college students away from the polls. They include registration and voting requirements that vary from state to state, difficulty with obtaining the proper ID or proving residency, lack of familiarity with local issues and local candidates and uncertainty about how or where to vote — at home or at school.

Some laws passed over the previous four years, including in Wisconsin, have created even more barriers.

[…]

To help students navigate the system, the newly formed Wisconsin Student Power Alliance plans to hire between 18 and 20 organizers on campuses across the state this fall whose first project will be a nonpartisan get-out-the-vote drive, co-director Lamonté Moore said.

The article didn’t say that they couldn’t figure it out. It said there are barriers, and went on briefly to explain. I’m glad there’ll be organizers out there to help the youngsters maneuver through some of those barriers. It’ll be the first time many of them will be able to participate in the voting process.

  2. Pat

Oh, oh. I just discovered that the Wisconsin Student Power Alliance is a liberal organization. Hopefully there be conservative student organizations that will step up and help educate other students as to what they need to do to vote.

    Pat,

I’ll bite. If a college student has to be “educated” on what they need to do to vote, which is super simple….should they even be voting?

Let smarter people decide elections if photo ID is too perplexing for a college student that is required to carey photo ID everyday on campus.

  4. Le Roi du Nord

Again the eminent Constitutional scholar sticks his foot in his constantly moving mouth with, “Let smarter people decide elections”.  How much more exclusionary can you get?

If we had a minimum IQ requirement for voters (which we don’t), Kevin would be left standing at the door of the poll, claiming yet another case of self-imposed victimhood.

  5. Pat

Kevin said, “Let smarter people decide elections”.

Who decides who is smarter, and does this means you shouldn’t vote?

  6. Kevin Scheunemann

    Pat,

I’m for students not smart enough to find their ID, just weed themselves out on their own.

    Darwinism. Liberals should love that.

  7. Mike

College students in dorm rooms usually have a home address somewhere else, and legally should be voting in their home polling place.

One of the articles on this featured a student who said he couldn’t vote because he had an out of state drivers license, so either he was voting illegally or he never bothered to change his residence to Wisconsin.

  8. Pat

I’m all for educating everyone as to what it takes to vote. I’m sure there are Republican students that may need help navigating through the barriers.

  9. Kevin Scheunemann

    Pat,

Sounds like this liberal group is trying to defeat the main liberal religion, Darwinism. Are they allowed in today’s liberal campus speech climate to repudiate Darwinism openly?

Find me a conservative student that is not smart enough to have a photo ID or arrange to vote either at college or back at home absentee. If they exist, then I say shame on them
for not being up to speed on Walker’s wonderful clean election law.

  10. Pat

    Kevin,

So are you saying you’re against educating the electorate as to what is required, and how to obtain the necessary items to vote?

  11. Kevin Scheunemann

    Pat,

I’m saying if a UW student needs this liberal group’s “education” in order to be ready to vote….we should seriously question why they are even admitted to a WI public university.

  12. Le Roi du Nord

“the main liberal religion”.  If Kevin believes what he says then he shouldn’t be allowed to vote either.  Weed out the ignorant and untrainable.

“Walker’s wonderful clean election law”.  What about the parts that have been shot-down in Federal Court?  Were those “wonderful”, or unconstitutional?

You were admitted and are seriously lacking in any knowledge regarding a myriad of topics.

Universities help students with all sorts of issues. The story describes some of the areas of common confusion. It’s all there in the lede, and detailed in the rest of the story. For someone to “figure it out”, they’d need a source for correct and up-to-date information. The WisGOP went out of their way to make it even more confusing and difficult for college students. What’s wrong with someone wanting to help students get the right info for their particular circumstances in Wisconsin?

  14. Pat

    Kevin,

There’s a young Republican organization at Madison that I would encourage to help educate their fellow students. I really don’t see what the problem is. It sounds like a good thing to me.

  15. Kevin Scheunemann

All 3 of you paint a bleak picture of the future with this group of college kids.

If college students are unable to vote without all this “help” and “education”, how will they be able to cope when difficult things in life present themselves?

I have a more affirmative belief that college kids who care about voting know what needs to be done.

Those that don’t care, we should just leave them alone rather than trying to get the apathetic to vote.

  16. Pat

Well Kevin, that’s why you’re wrong, and we’re right.

  17. Kevin Scheunemann

    Pat,

Isn’t this like “evangelism”?   I was told people have the right to be left alone from the message light of Christ.

Don’t people have same right to be left alone and indifferent about voting?

Or is this liberal preaching about voting somehow different?

Just curious…and fascinated by the double standard on this.

  18. Pat

    Kevin,

    You’re trolling again.

  19. Kevin Scheunemann

    Pat,

    Not really.

Just curious why this kind of invasive liberal preaching to the indifferent, and want to be left alone, is held in high regard on campus compared to standard Christian evangelism which is met with derision and the liberal cries of right to be left alone?

I think it’s an interesting observation on the hypocritical liberal campus life.

  20. Pat

Wow, you can certainly shift gears.

  21. Le Roi du Nord

    Kevin:

Unlike you, most folks don’t emerge from the womb knowing all the nuances of the election process.  That is why we have classes in school like Civics and Social Studies. And why we don’t need the current administration to pass laws making it more difficult for certain segments of society to vote.

“Those that don’t care, we should just leave them alone rather than trying to get the apathetic to vote”.  Those of use unchurched (another made-up Kevin word), non-believers, and those of other faiths sure wish you would apply this philosophy to your religious zealotry. The double standard here is all yours..

Explain the “hypocritical liberal campus life”.  As a master of hypocrisy it should be easy for you to enlighten us on that concept.

  22. Kevin Scheunemann

    Pat,

I’d like liberals to embrace this attitude for all types of Evangelism… Not just for simple voting instructions any 10 year old can easily grasp.

  23. Pat

That’s not what you said in your first statement. Now you waffle to something totally unrelated to the subject. As to the subject, why are you against people helping people to understand what’s required to vote?

  24. Kevin Scheunemann

    Pat,

Just serving up some liberal medicine to see what kind of reaction I get applying the liberal (in)tolerance standard of Christian evangelism to one of liberalism’s own religious evangelism (in this case preaching the need to vote and sharing the liberal gospel on how to vote)…was not disappointed by the reactions.

    Thank you for playing.

  25. Pat

Nice deflection. What you’re doing is known as trolling.

  26. Kevin Scheunemann

    Pat,

    Or a “great argument”.

  27. Pat

    No, it’s trolling.
